Il film, vincitore del Leone d’Oro alla 79a Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, racconta l’epopea umana e artistica di Nan Goldin, una delle più influenti fotografe contemporanee diventata attivista per la battaglia contro l'azienda farmaceutica Purdue della famiglia Sackler, ritenuta responsabile delle migliaia di morti per overdose di ossicodone negli Stati Uniti. Diapositive, fotografie, dialoghi intimi e filmati inediti delle azioni del gruppo P.A.I.N., fondato dall’artista per denunciare i Sackler, si intrecciano con le sue vicende biografiche. Seguiamo il suo percorso di vita tumultuoso e appassionante: dal difficile rapporto con i genitori al trauma per il suicidio della sorella Barbara, dalla fuga da casa alle difficoltà economiche, fino al successo nel mondo dell’arte.
The film, winner of the Golden Lion at the 79th Venice Film Festival, tells the human and artistic epic of Nan Goldin, one of the most influential contemporary photographers who became an activist in the battle against the Sackler family's pharmaceutical company Purdue, responsible for the thousands of oxyContin overdose deaths in the United States. Slides, photographs, intimate dialogues and unpublished footage of the actions of the P.A.I.N. group, founded by the artist to denounce the Sacklers, are intertwined with her biographical events. We follow her tumultuous and exciting life path: from the difficult relationship with her parents to the trauma of her sister Barbara's suicide, from running away from home to economic difficulties, up to success in the art world.

Laura Poitras è regista, produttrice e giornalista. CITIZENFOUR, il terzo capitolo della sua trilogia post 11 settembre, ha vinto l'Oscar per il Miglior Documentario e numerosi altri premi. La prima parte della trilogia, My Country, My Country sull'occupazione statunitense dell'Iraq è stata candidata all'Oscar e la seconda parte, The Oath, incentrata su Guantanamo e la guerra al terrorismo, a due Emmy Award. Il suo reportage sulla sorveglianza globale di massa della NSA ha vinto il premio Pulitzer 2014 per il servizio pubblico con The Guardian e Washington Post.
