This film explores the sensational discovery of an art treasure trove hidden in the Munich flat of an elderly man, Cornelius Gurlitt - over 1400 works amassed by his father Hildebrand Gurlitt, art dealer to the Nazis. It follows in his father's footsteps and reveals the fate of art which was deemed by Hitler to be 'degenerate'. This extraordinary film, the first of two parts, sheds new light on what happened to paintings often seized from Jewish collectors, lost or undersold, and focuses on the issue of restitution of the works to their rightful owners.
