Le immagini più note del pittore russo Marc Chagall (1887-1985) sono le coppie di innammorati che volano, i mazzi di fiori variopinti, le rappresentazioni oniriche della realtà. Ciò che è meno conosciuto è lo stretto legame che Chagall aveva con la musica, una passione che risaliva alla sua infanzia cullata dalla musica klezmer e dai salmi liturgici. Il film racconta come l'artista abbia espresso questa sua passione anche nella pittura: dalle ricorrenti raffigurazioni di strumenti musicali agli interventi per il teatro: decori, quinte di scena, costumi per il balletto e l'opera. Chagall ha anche firmato le decorazioni di vari templi della musica come la cupola dell'Opéra di Parigi e le monumentali tele dell'Opera di New York al Lincoln Center.

The most famous images of Russian artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) are couples of lovers in the sky, colourful bouquets and dreamlike representations of reality. What is less known is that Chagall had a close relationship with music, a passion that came from a childhood steeped in Klezmer music and liturgical psalms. This film shows how this passion was expressed in his work, from the multiple representations of instruments throughout his work, his stage decorations, curtains scenes and costumes for ballet and opera. Chagall also signed paintings for various temples of music, such as the ceiling of the Paris Opera and the monumental canvases of the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center.
