Mona Hatoum è nata a Beirut da una famiglia palestinese in esilio. Nel 1975, durante una breve visita a Londra, è costretta a rimanere in Inghilterra a causa dello scoppio della guerra civile in Libano. L'esperienza di questo doppio esilio, i problemi di genere, le attuali questioni politiche vengono espressi attraverso l'uso di vari mezzi come video, sculture o installazioni. Il suo lavoro esprime il disagio sociale che deriva dalla sofferenza dell'emarginazione o dall'oppressione politica. La regista Alyssa Verbizh ha seguito l'artista per alcuni mesi, dal suo studio a Berlino fino all'allestimento di una mostra a Parigi e durante una residenza presso il MAC VAL Museum.

Mona Hatoum was born in Beirut to an exiled Palestinian family. In 1975, while on a short visit to London, civil war broke out in Lebanon and she was forced to remain in England. Her experience as a double exile as well as references to gender issues and current political affairs are articulated in her work through the use of multiple media of performance, video, sculpture and installation. Her work deals with social contradictions, such as the suffering of alienated people or political oppression. Filmmaker Alyssa Verbizh spent a couple of months following the artist from her studio in Berlin to an exhibition in Paris and to a residency at the MAC VAL Museum.
